Big Boy's New Fast-food Spin-off Aims to Revive Iconic Brand
Big Boy Restaurants, the storied American diner chain that once boasted nearly 1,000 locations across the United States, announced in 2023 the launch of a fast-food spin-off concept called Bob's Big Boy — a nod to the chain's original 1936 incarnation. The first two locations were announced in metro Detroit suburbs as an experiment in a lower-cost, counter-service format without traditional table service.

The move was widely seen as an attempt to reverse decades of decline for a brand that has shrunk to roughly 60 U.S. locations, nearly all in Michigan. By stripping out the costs of full-service dining, operators hoped to make the format financially viable in an era of rising labor costs. Industry observers watched the experiment as an example of a legacy casual-dining brand attempting to pivot toward the fast-casual model that has dominated new restaurant growth in recent years.
