Sony Unveils Project Q: a New PlayStation Handheld for Streaming

Sony unveiled Project Q at its PlayStation Showcase on May 24, 2023, a dedicated handheld that streams PS5 games over a home wireless network using Remote Play.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed the device, which pairs an 8 inch 1080p HD screen supporting 60fps playback with every button and feature of the DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The original design paired a controller with a screen and required a PS5 console for Remote Play, rather than running games natively.

Sony subsequently named it PlayStation Portal and set November 15, 2023 as its initial launch date at a US price of $199.99.

The company also introduced its first official wireless PlayStation earbuds featuring lossless, low latency audio designed for gaming.

Ryan positioned Project Q as part of Sony's broader expansion into cloud gaming, PC, mobile, and live service titles, signaling the company's confidence in remote gaming technology.

Portal's cloud option removes the need to keep a PS5 running, but adds a subscription gate. Sony's November 2025 rollout covers eligible digital PS5 games and catalog titles for adult PlayStation Plus Premium accounts in supported regions. It does not make every owned game streamable, and availability can change. Sony then set the US recommended price at $249.99 from April 2, 2026 in its pricing announcement.
