Why It Matters
Preston Lord, 16, died two days after he was beaten outside a Queen Creek Halloween party on October 28, 2023, a death the coroner ruled a homicide. Seven young men were arrested in March 2024; only William Owen Hines has been sentenced, taking a manslaughter plea in May 2025 for twelve years the Arizona Republic. Investigators reopened shelved assault cases across the East Valley and made more than two dozen arrests, nearly all ending in probation. Jacob Meisner and Talan Renner now face separate trials, with the October 2026 date already contested by defense lawyers AZ Family. Preston's Law, signed in May 2025, raised penalties for swarming attacks.
