Chris Johnson Writes to His Children About Life With ALS

Chris Johnson says ALS has changed his body but not his identity as a father, as the former Tennessee Titans star sends a letter to all four of his children.

He traces the first signs to weakness in his right hand and describes how the disease eventually took away his ability to speak clearly.

After 10 NFL seasons, including a 2009 campaign with more than 2,000 rushing yards, he has struggled to reconcile physical decline with a life built around speed.

His wife Brittany and their children have taken on responsibilities he wishes they did not have to carry, even as their everyday humor helps him feel like himself.

He encourages his children to pursue their dreams, support one another, and remember that their father’s love remains constant through an uncertain future.
An athlete’s public diagnosis can draw attention to ALS research, but families carry the daily workload long after the interview ends. Good Morning America reported that Brittany Johnson described caregiving as a heavy workload and that a research effort in his honor had been established at the Healey Center. His participation in experimental treatment also exposes the gap between access and certainty: receiving care does not guarantee that decline will stop. Watch for published results from the clinical trials he joins, where individual hope must face evidence about whether treatments work.
