The NFL sent a memo to all 32 teams reminding personnel of its gambling rules after a federal investigation exposed illegal sports betting involving NBA players and coaches.
The FBI probe uncovered two schemes, illegal high stakes poker games tied to organized crime in New York and a betting ring in which players shared confidential injury information, leading to the arrest of more than 30 defendants including Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups and former player Damon Jones.
Among the allegations, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier reportedly left a 2023 game early while more than $200,000 was wagered on the under of his prop bet.
Under NFL policy, players may place legal bets on sports other than football when they are away from team facilities and travel, and may enter fantasy football contests with prize pools of $250 or less.
The league strictly prohibits betting on NFL games, fixing outcomes, and sharing nonpublic information with outsiders, and it requires players to report any attempt to solicit inside information or manipulate games.
Violations carry discipline that reaches a minimum two year suspension for wagering on a player's own team, and the league even monitors player podcasts for sponsorships from gambling companies.
