Print romance sales more than doubled between 2020 and 2023, climbing from 18 million copies to 39 million, reflecting a broader cultural embrace of the genre.

Social media platforms — particularly TikTok's "BookTok" community — have played a central role in fueling both the genre's popularity and the stores' success, drawing customers from outside their immediate neighborhoods. The stores function not just as retail spaces but as community hubs, hosting events, book clubs, and author signings that cater to a dedicated and passionate readership.

Dedicated romance bookstores have multiplied from dozens into the hundreds, and the pace still accelerates. The American Booksellers Association counts 232 openings across three years, 120 of them in 2025 alonePublishers Weekly, while Circana BookScan logged 51 million print copies sold in twelve months, more than double the volume four years earlierCircana. Dark romance and BookTok fuel demand beyond any single author, even one whose latest became the fastest selling adult title in BookScan history.
