College football is not a single league but a set of conferences, groups of universities that schedule most of their games against one another and negotiate broadcast rights collectively. Recruiting and roster turnover

Rosters are rebuilt continuously because players age out on a fixed schedule, so recruiting high school athletes is a permanent parallel competition with its own rankings, signing periods and coverage. A transfer system allows athletes to move between institutions, which added a second and faster channel of roster change on top of recruiting. Compensation for athletes is the sport's central institutional argument, covering payment for the commercial use of a player's name and likeness, and the rules governing it have shifted repeatedly and remain subject to litigation and legislation.

The postseason and how teams qualify

Unlike a league with a fixed bracket, college football historically decided its champion through polls and paired teams in bowl games, matchups arranged by invitation rather than by qualification. A playoff structure now sits on top of that older system, with a selection committee choosing and seeding participants, so qualification depends on human judgment about schedule strength and quality of opposition rather than on a purely mechanical standing. Bowl games continue alongside it. That combination of committee discretion and inherited tradition is why postseason selection generates argument every single cycle.

The sport is regional in a way the leagues are not

College football's audience is organized around universities and the regions attached to them, which gives it a character no professional league shares. Stadiums at the largest programs hold crowds bigger than any professional venue, rivalries run for a century or more, and alumni attachment means the audience for a given team is distributed nationally while remaining rooted in one place. That regional intensity is also what makes conference realignment so contentious, since a scheduling decision can end a rivalry that predates everyone involved.
