How the league is built
The NHL runs thirty-two clubs across two conferences and four divisions, with a playoff bracket that is largely divisional in its early rounds and ends in the Stanley Cup Final. Playoff series are best-of-seven, and hockey's high variance means favorites lose series often enough that the postseason is unusually unpredictable. The Cup itself is a single trophy passed between winners rather than remade each year, and the traditions attached to it are covered as closely as the results.
A hard cap and a global talent pipeline
The league operates a hard salary cap with an upper and lower limit, so clubs must spend within a band rather than simply below a ceiling. Contracts can be structured across many years with varying annual payments, and the cap charge is the average rather than the amount paid in any given season, which creates well-known planning strategies and the disputes that follow them. Players arrive from junior leagues in North America, from college programs, and from European leagues, so the draft covers a genuinely international pool and prospects frequently develop outside the organization that drafted them.
Why goaltending distorts everything
One position in hockey has an outsized and poorly predictable effect on outcomes. A goaltender in strong form can carry a team through a playoff run that its underlying play does not justify, and goaltending performance is notoriously unstable from season to season. This is why analytical coverage separates shot quality and volume from save results, and why a team's record can diverge sharply from how it has actually played. A physical sport and the arguments that follow
Hockey is played at speed with legal body contact, and the resulting injury burden shapes both the sport and its coverage. Head injuries and their long term consequences have driven changes to rules, equipment and return-to-play protocols, and the disclosure practices around injuries are unusually restrictive, with teams often describing only the general area of the body affected. The place of fighting in the game is a long-running argument between tradition and player safety. Playoff hockey intensifies all of it, since players routinely compete through injuries that would end a regular season night.
